Parenting advice easily overwhelms, especially when it’s not requested. One breastfeeding mom remembers her initial parenting fears and how she managed to calm them.
Create a stable schedule. “Cat and I are both freelancers, so we can tag-team to create a care plan for Vivi that doesn’t compromise our work demands.”
Be prepared for changes. “A few days after Vivi was born, I went into the shower one cup size and came out of that shower another. Be prepared for some serious changes.”
Work as a team. “Cat and I don’t have a lot of alone time. We’ve become a team, though, and we find ways to connect while we’re taking care of the baby.”
Know when to tune out advice. “All of the information out there can be overwhelming. I found a balance between talking to my doctor and asking my mom friends for advice or tactics.”
Talk to your OB/GYN. “I wish I’d talked to my OB/GYN about breastfeeding, about what it would mean for me and what pumps would be best for my lifestyle.”
Believe in yourself. “Initially, I had so many doubts that I could do this. But female co-workers have told me that seeing me be a mom and keep my career active has inspired them.”
Give yourself credit. “Breastfeeding is harder for some women and some babies. Just because it doesn’t happen easily doesn’t mean it’s an end game. Any amount you can give your baby is a success.”
